A Guide to Arabic Orthography in Persian Writing
Published in: Jahan-e Ketab (The World of Books), Issue 398, April–May 2023
This guide addresses the orthographic challenges of embedding Arabic phrases and sentences within Persian texts. Despite the visual similarity of the two scripts, their writing conventions differ in subtle but significant ways—especially at the level of spacing, diacritics, punctuation, and Qur’anic citation. Drawing on practical experience and consultations with experts, the piece offers suggestions for clearer, more accurate Arabic writing in Persian contexts. While not a formal style manual, it aims to fill gaps left by existing Persian orthography guidelines and to assist writers who frequently engage with Arabic material. The guide concludes with annotated examples drawn from real-world usage.
